Why Square Tires?

Last summer I moved from Northern Vancouver Island to Canada's North of 60, this blog is my ongoing exploration and commentary on the vastly different climate, economy and culture of the Klondike.

Why Square Tires? This is a local expression based on what happens to vehicles in the extreme cold we experience here. When the thermometer dips to around minus 40 degrees Farenheight or lower, the air in the tires condenses so small that the tire pressure drops and tires develop a flat spot where they rest on the ground, and the tire material 'stiffens up'. As soon as you start driving around the friction of the tires on the road warms up the air and the tires, and they get round again. But for the first few minutes of driving, you feel like you are driving on 'Square Tires'.
